Example DSL modem setup, courtesy BTC

Common DSL problems - Filter installed on line to the modem. A filter must not be installed on the line running to the DSL modem - this is guaranteed to prevent the modem from working. Filters must be installed on each regular phone, answering machine, cordless phone, fax machine or other phone equipment, but never on the DSL modem line itself.
- DSL light on modem not lit or blinking. Generally means the modem is not receiving a good DSL signal on the phone line. This will occur if a filter has been installed on the line to the modem, or if a filter is missing from one of the phones. It could also mean that DSL has not yet been activated on this line by BTC.
- Ethernet light on modem not lit. Generally means the modem does not have an good Ethernet connection to the computer or other equipment. Normal if you are using USB, but mandatory if you are using Ethernet. Ensure the correct network cable is used - different cables are needed for connecting directly to a computer compared to connecting to a router or hub in some cases. You may need to purchase an additional network cable for some setups.
- USB light on modem not lit. Generally means the modem does not have a good USB connection to the computer. Normal if you are using Ethernet, but mandatory if you are using USB. Try disconnecting other USB devices one at a time to see if one of them is interfering. If using an USB hub, try bypassing the hub and go straight into the computer.
- Power light on modem not lit. Check the AC adapter to ensure it is correctly plugged into a live outlet, and properly connected to the DSL modem. If the modem has a power switch, ensure that it is on.
- Running Windows XP or Vista and trying to install software provided by ISP. Windows XP and Vista have built-in support for DSL modems, and you should not attempt to install the software on the ISP CD-ROM. All other versions of Windows require this CD, but it will not work with XP/Vista and it is not required for XP/Vista.
- Forgot to install the ISP CD-ROM, not running Windows XP or Vista. All versions of Windows before XP (2000, Millennium, NT, 98, 95) require that you install the software CD provided by your ISP.
- USB modem connection not recognised. Windows NT and most versions of Windows 95 do not support USB devices. You will need to purchase an Ethernet card if you do not already have one and use a modem that supports Ethernet.
